San ANTONIO, TEXAS.-The Presidents of Russia and Brazil, VLADIMIR PUTIN and LUIZ INACIO LULA DA SILVA , respectively, discussed the situation in Venezuela by telephone, on Wednesday.
{Los Presidentes de Rusia y de Brasil, Vladímir Putin y Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, respectivamente, abordaron este miércoles por teléfono, la situación en torno a Venezuela.}
Regarding the violent scenario that unfolded on January 3, involving an intervention by U.S. forces in Caracas and the kidnapping of its head of state, NICOLAS MADURO.
{Respecto al violento escenario que se presentó, el pasado 3 de enero de una intervención de las fuerzas de EE.UU. en Caracas y del secuestro de su jefe de Estado, Nicolás Maduro.}
The Leaders agreed on the importance of guaranteeing sovereignty and the national interests of the South American country, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.
{Los Líderes coincidieron en la importancia de garantizar la soberanía y los intereses nacionales del país sudamericano, según un comunicado difundido por el Kremlin.}
They also agreed to “continue coordinating efforts” through the United Nations and BRICS. With the aim of “de-escalating the situation in Latin America and other regions of the world.”
{Asimismo, acordaron “seguir coordinando esfuerzos” mediante las Naciones Unidas y los BRICS. Con el objetivo de “desescalar la situación en Latinoamérica y otras regiones del mundo”.}
LULA had condemned: the US aggression, Maduro’s arrest, and his transfer to the US to be tried for drug trafficking, because —he denounced— it constitutes a “flagrant violation of international law.”
{Lula había condenado: la agresión estadounidense, la detención de Maduro y su traslado a EE.UU. para ser juzgado por narcotráfico, porque —denunció— constiuyen una “flagrante violación del derecho internacional”.}
This sets “an extremely dangerous precedent” for the world. For his part, Russian Foreign Minister SERGUEI LAVROV, on Wednesday described the aggression against Venezuela as “illegal” and called for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the South American country.
{El cual sienta “un precedente extremadamente peligroso” para el mundo. Por su parte, el canciller ruso, Serguéi Lavrov, calificó este miércoles la agresión a Venezuela de “ilegal” e hizo un llamado a respetar la soberanía y la integridad territorial del país suramericano.}
Under the pretext of fighting narco-terrorism, on January 3, the US launched a massive military attack on Venezuelan territory, affecting Caracas and the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira.
{Bajo el pretexto de la lucha contra el narcoterrorismo, EE.UU. lanzó el pasado 3 de enero una agresión militar masiva en territorio venezolano, que afectó a Caracas y los estados de Miranda, Aragua y La Guaira.}
The operation concluded with the kidnapping of NICOLAS MADURO and his wife, CILIA FLORES , who were taken to New York. The targets were military sites where air defense equipment and communications systems were deployed, although urban areas were also hit and there were civilian casualties.

Caracas described Washington’s actions as a “very serious military aggression.” It warned that the objective of the attacks “is none other than to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals, in an attempt to forcibly break the nation’s political independence.”

MADURO pleaded not guilty at his first hearing before the U.S. Justice Department in the Southern District Court of New York, accused of narco-terrorism. FLORES did the same.

The Vice President of Venezuela, DELCY RODRIGUEZ , was sworn in as acting president of the South American country. In doing so, she complied with the explicit provisions of the Venezuelan Constitution.

Many countries around the world, including Russia and China, urged the release of Maduro and his wife. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to decide its own destiny without any external intervention.

According to Venezuela’s Ministry of Interior, Justice, and Peace, at least 100 people died in the attack. Including 32 Cubans who were part of MADURO’s security detail.
