“We need the discipline of the Army and Navy to face the problem of insecurity and violence, I don’t want the National Guard to end up like the Federal Preventive Police,” said President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
He said that “there is a lack of information, and bad faith” in those who question the publication of the decree that makes official the assistance of the Army and Navy to the National Guard (GN).”
“When it derives from a transitional constitutional reform authorizing them to carry out security tasks, which was approved six months ago by all parties in the Congress of the Union, and most local congresses.”
Lopez Obrador said that: “to consolidate the change, the NG has to have a close relationship with the armed forces, that the military police and the naval police, have to be part of it and the command has to be assigned to the armed forces.
He stressed that the National Guard is consolidating and although “it has been complex to face the problem of insecurity and violence “it is moving forward, and I am very confident that we will achieve peace.
He stated that: “he has no problems of conscience because of the participation of the armed forces in security tasks. I am going to defend that, and that is why the reform of the Constitution.”
And “if there is evidence of violation of human rights by the National Guard, then we rectify it, but that is not the case, because we are not going to betray our ideals, our principles.”
At a press conference, he said he has elements “to sustain that both in the Defense, and in the Navy there is a process toward respect for human rights.”
“A lot of work is being done in that sense, and he emphasized that as commander of the armed forces he will not give them orders to repress the people, as was done in the times of Porfirio Diaz or in ’68.”
He said “the publication of the decree was “really a formality” and after complying with the procedure, some people find out that the armed forces are being given powers to carry out security tasks, when this has already been resolved. They take advantage of everything to, question and exaggerate.”
“Our opponents don’t analyze things in depth, but they also make mistakes, because they are still an elite. We are talking about leaders, civil organizations, NGOs, analysts.”
“Even academics who levitate, they have no communication with the people. They may be eminent in the field, but they lack collect the feelings of the people of Mexico.”
He called: “ on them to review the surveys, including the INEGI, on the people’s opinion of the institutions, “those that come out first, the Navy and Defense Secretariat, with more than 80 percent acceptance. We should no longer be acting on the opinion of the elites.If that were the case, we would already be failures as a government.”
